History of the crane
The crane is considered a sacred bird in Japan. It was a Japanese custom that if a person folded 1,000 origami cranes they would be granted one wish. Emily Gilroy's classmates folded 1,000 origami cranes while Emily was a patient at Riley Hospital. Their one wish was for Emily to survive her battle with cancer. Emily passed away
at the age of 11 as a fifth grade student at Orchard.
